"...at midnight Ashland, Kentucky,
and
a lonely girl under the marquee of a closed up show." - Jack Kerouac, On the Road In the late 40's and
early 50's writer Jack
Kerouac was zig- zagging across the country, taking everything in. It
all came
out in his thinly-disquised autobiography On
the Road published in 1957. On this journey, he paused to describe
a scene
at a theater in Ashland KY. Kerouac was born in Lowell, Massachusetts
in 1922.
His first novel The Town and the City was
published in 1950, but On the Road sparked
and epitomized what became known as "the Beat generation" and made
Kerouac one of the most controversial and best-known writers of his
time. He
died in St. Petersburg, Florida, in 1969, at the age of forty-seven.
To remember this event the Paramount Arts
Center, Ashland's sole surviving theater, will hold a celebration of
Kerouac on
Wed. Oct. 19. At 7pm, a plaque will be placed under the marque with the
line
from "On the Road". Also,
readings from his books and live music will be performed in the
Paramounts'
Marque Room.
Music will be provided by Rob McNurlin and
Ritch Collins, both Jack Kerouac fans and originizers of the event.
McNurlin
has released 4 cds and tours extensivley, this summer he performed at
The Woody
Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah OK, sharing the stage with David Amram
a
contemporary of Kerouac. The Ritch Collins Three-O plays an eclectic
mix of
jazz, blues, country, folk and show tunes with an emphisis on Old time
string
band music. The band features Jeff Carter on flute, clarinet and
whistle, Bob
Shortridge on upright bass and Ritch Collins on guitar and vocals.Their
debut
cd "Hillbilly Jazz" will be released on Oct.19 and features the Rob
McNurlin penned "Lotta Good Men" a song about Kerouac. John Hurlbut
manager of the Fur Peace Ranch will read selections from Kerouacs
writings.
The Highway
23 Cultural
Heritage Driving Tour will provide visitors and travelers with a booklet and compact discs that describe the
cultural heritage of the Highway 23 Country Music corridor. Loretta Lynn, Ralph
Stanley, Patty Loveless and Crystal
Gayle appear along with local artists
craftsmen and workers of traditional jobs such as coal mining and oil
refining.
The packaged project will include 2 audio CDs of the actual tour,
narrated by Ricky Skaggs, one
audio compilation of musicians referenced from the driving
tour and one guide book, complete with maps, photos and additional
contextual
information. www.history.ky.gov
